Regarding Jaela and The Resistance
This is the “Primary Intended Path” for the main story to progress.
-
The Goal: The party needs to find Jaela, who has gone into hiding with her most loyal followers after publicly abdicating her position to prevent a bloody civil war. She and her followers now form the heart of a secret resistance.
-
The First Clue: The main hook to start them on this path is the subtle symbol of the “old,” flowing Silver Flame. Discovering this symbol scratched on a wall or door in the city will lead them to their first contact with the resistance network.
-
Magical Contact: If the party uses the
Sendingspell to contact Jaela, her response will be cryptic due to the risk of magical surveillance. The message we crafted was: “The shadow has ears. Trust only the old symbols of the Flame. The Resolute Word still stands against the tide. Be my scalpel.”. This rewards their smart thinking and points them toward the same clues. -
The Party’s Role: Jaela sees the party as the only solution to her problem. She cannot fight Lira with armies, as that would start the civil war she sacrificed everything to avoid. She needs the party to act as her “scalpel”—a small, precise force that can infiltrate Lira’s regime and cut the poison out from the inside.
Alternative Narrative: “The Gut-Punch”
In this version, the party is operating on flawed intelligence. The Whispering Flame is more cunning and has moved faster than anyone, even Jaela, anticipated.
The Setup: The Ritual is Already Done
Lira is not a fool. She would not conduct her most important and vulnerable ritual in public during a festival where it could be disrupted. The ritual to corrupt the Heart of Radiance was her primary goal, and she completed it as soon as she had the final component: Kael.
-
The Timeline: The ritual happened in secret, in the dead of night, perhaps even a day or two before the party’s fight with the patrol outside the bakery. Lira secured her ultimate power first.
-
The Festival’s New Purpose: The “Festival of Rededication” is no longer the ritual itself. It is a victory celebration and a coronation. It’s the moment where Lira, now fully empowered by the corrupted Heart, will demonstrate her new, absolute connection to the “true” Silver Flame and cement her rule over the church and the city.
The Misdirection: Why Jaela and the Resistance Are Wrong
Jaela’s intelligence network is good, but they are an underground movement operating in the shadows. Lira’s inner circle of true Whispering Flame cultists would have been the only ones present for the secret ritual.
-
The rest of Lira’s followers—the thousands of zealous templars and priests—are true believers who are not privy to the dark truth. They genuinely believe the Festival is a holy day of celebration.
-
Jaela’s spies would see the massive preparations for the festival and, based on the information they have, would logically (but incorrectly) assume that this public event is the planned time for the ritual. They are seeing the public-facing preparations, not the secret ceremony that already took place.
The Infiltration: The Awful Discovery
The party, believing they are on a rescue mission with a three-day deadline, executes their plan to infiltrate the Cathedral. They expect to find Kael imprisoned, waiting for a ritual. They are racing a clock that has already run out.
When they finally breach the inner sanctum where the Heart of Radiance is kept, they don’t find a ritual-in-progress. They find the aftermath.
-
The Scene: The chamber is silent. The Heart of Radiance is no longer a beacon of pure silver light. It now pulses with a sickly, smoky, silver-gray light, the very color of the Whispering Flame. Lira might be there, meditating before it, drawing in its corrupted power.
-
The “Gut-Punch” Reveal: In the center of the ritual circle, they find Kael. He is already dead. His body is not merely slain; it’s clear he was used in a dark ritual. Perhaps he is a desiccated husk, his life force drained, or his body is marked with shadowy, weeping runes. This is the horrifying, undeniable proof that they have failed.
The New Mission: From Rescue to Revenge
This reveal completely changes the party’s objective and the stakes of the final confrontation.
-
The Old Goal is Gone: They cannot save Kael. They cannot prevent the Heart’s corruption.
-
The New Goals Emerge:
-
Avenge Kael: The mission is now intensely personal, especially for Toriman.
-
Expose Lira: They must find a way to show the people of Flamekeep the true, dark nature of the power Lira now wields.
-
Cleanse the Flame: Their final objective becomes a desperate question: Can the corrupted Heart of Radiance be cleansed? Or must it be destroyed to free the Silver Flame from Bel Shalor’s grasp?
