When Tira Miron fought against the forces of Bel Shalor, she was carrying an artifact of immense power. Along with her great sword Kloinjer and the guidance of the rainbow-winged serpent, she managed to push back the forces of darkness and eventually deal the final blow to Bel Shalor. This artifact was the Heart of Radiance. The Heart was a large gemstone made up of three different aspects.

Shard 1: The Whispering Shard (Knowledge)

  • Focus: Knowledge and Enlightenment
  • Description: This shard embodies the vast knowledge and arcane secrets Tira Miron utilized to overcome Bel Shalor. It could:
    • Grant temporary bonuses to Intelligence and Wisdom checks, aiding in research and recollection.
    • Reveal hidden knowledge or forgotten lore when attuned to, providing glimpses into the past or forgotten languages.
    • In the wrong hands, it could amplify paranoia and obsession with knowledge, twisting the user’s mind with whispers and half-truths.
  • Connection to Tira Miron: This shard represents the vast knowledge and strategic brilliance Tira Miron possessed. It embodies the power of understanding one’s enemy and the world around them, a key factor in her victory over Bel Shalor.

Shard 2: The Will of the Forge (Action)

  • Focus: Power and Creation
  • Description: This shard represents the raw magical power Tira Miron channelled to forge her legendary weapons and armour. It could:
    • Grant temporary buffs to physical abilities (strength, dexterity, constitution).
    • Allow the user to magically enhance weapons and armour, granting temporary bonuses or special abilities.
    • In the wrong hands, it could fuel destructive magic or create powerful weapons of war.
  • Connection to Tira Miron: This shard embodies the decisive action and martial prowess she displayed in her fight against Bel Shalor. It represents the tools needed to enact one’s will.

The Shard of the Forgemaster A Legendary Artifact Description: A pulsating, crystalline shard, imbued with the raw energy of creation. It hums with power, and its surface shimmers with arcane symbols. Abilities:

  • Touch of Power: Once per long rest, the wielder can touch any weapon. For one hour, the weapon gains a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls. If the weapon already has a +1/+2, this replaces that bonus.
  • Creator’s Might: Once per long rest, the wielder can use a bonus action to empower themselves. For one minute, they gain a +2 bonus to one ability score of their choice.
  • Shape the World: Once per long rest, the wielder can use an action to alter the terrain within 30 feet. They can create barriers, fill in gaps, or even reshape the land itself. This effect lasts for 1 hour. The changes must be relatively simple and cannot fundamentally alter the landscape. For example, the wielder could create a small hill, a trench, or a wall of earth. Warning: The shard is a powerful artifact, and its use can have unintended consequences. After using the Shape the World ability, the wielder must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, they take 2d8 necrotic damage and their maximum hit points are reduced by half that amount for 24 hours. They also suffer 2 points of exhaustion.

Shard 3: The Cleansing Flame (Purification)

  • Focus: Healing and Restoration
  • Description: This shard represents the purifying flames that supposedly consumed Bel Shalor’s essence after his defeat. It could:
    • Heal wounds and cure diseases with a touch.
    • Purify corrupted areas or objects.
    • Grant temporary resistance to fire and other harmful energies.
  • Connection to Tira Miron: This shard reflects the cleansing aftermath of her victory, restoring balance after the destructive battle. It represents the power to heal and rebuild.

HIDDEN - Shard 4: The Shroud of Deception (Trickery)

  • Focus: Deception and Illusion
  • Description: This shard appears as a swirling, multi-coloured mist that seems to distort reality around it. It embodies the manipulative tactics and trickery potentially employed during the original conflict between Tira Miron and Bel Shalor. It could:
    • Cast powerful illusions that are difficult to discern from reality.
    • Grant temporary bonuses to Charisma and Dexterity checks related to deception and misdirection.
    • Allow the user to alter their appearance or sow discord among others through subtle manipulations.
  • Connection to the Heart: This shard represents a hidden aspect of the Heart’s power, possibly a force wielded by Bel Shalor or a third party to manipulate the events of the original conflict. Its true purpose and origins remain shrouded in mystery.

Sacrifice for Full Potential:

  • When the four shards are reunited, a terrible truth is revealed. To unlock the Heart’s full potential and true power, a sacrifice of a “pure” soul is required. The definition of “pure” is ambiguous, leading to a moral dilemma for the party.
    • Does it mean someone completely innocent?
    • Does it require a specific alignment (good vs evil)?
    • Can the party find a loophole or alternative to avoid the sacrifice?

Complications and Considerations:

  • The Whispering Flame might be aware of this sacrificial requirement and attempt to manipulate the party into offering a suitable soul (potentially Sister Isolde or even a party member).
  • The knowledge of this hidden cost could strain the party’s trust and force them to confront difficult choices about the true purpose of the Heart.
  • The sacrifice could have unforeseen consequences, potentially unleashing a powerful entity or warping the Heart’s power in unpredictable ways.

Optional Twists:

  • The “purity” requirement could be a deception itself, a manipulation woven into the Shroud of Deception to trick someone into offering a sacrifice that empowers the true villain.
  • There might be another way to unlock the Heart’s full potential, requiring a specific ritual or the gathering of additional artifacts, adding another layer of complexity to the campaign.
