DM’s Reference: The Journey to Flamekeep

(This is a narrative montage. The goal is to convey the passage of roughly three weeks, allow for character development, and foreshadow the changes in Flamekeep. Read the descriptions and use the prompts to encourage roleplaying.)

Phase 1: Out of the Shadow (The First Few Days)

“You stand at the base of the dark, silent Cannith tower, the plaza behind you littered with the broken forms of your enemies. The secrets and treasures you’ve recovered feel heavy in your packs and in your minds. You turn your backs on the spire and begin the arduous journey out of Making, retracing your steps across the treacherous plateau of black glass and past the deep, fiery chasms that scar the dead city. The silence is profound, broken only by the wind whistling through ruined spires. After a day of grim travel, the silhouette of the city finally fades into the gray mist behind you.”

  • DM’s Prompt (To the Group): “You make camp on that first night after leaving the city, the oppressive silence of the Mournland surrounding you. You’ve just won a major victory and uncovered some of the greatest secrets of the Last War. What is the mood of the group? Is there a sense of triumph, or does the weight of your new knowledge feel like a burden?”

  • DM’s Prompt (For Loot): “Elrath and Sarodan, you are now attuned to your new Cannith prototypes, Axe-iety Relief and the Spellweaver's Opal. How do these items feel in your hands? Do they feel natural, or is there an alien, manufactured quality to their magic?”

  • DM’s Prompt (For #13): “#13, you hold the files detailing the truth of ‘Project Chimera,’ your squad, and #12. Do you open them on this first night to read the cold, official record of your past, or do you feel a need to wait for a safer, more peaceful place?”

Phase 2: The Thawing Border (End of the First Week)

“After days of grim travel, you notice a change. The gray mist begins to thin. You see a petrified tree with a single, impossible green leaf upon it. Soon after, you cross an old, invisible border, and the world seems to breathe again. The sun, a true sun, breaks through the clouds, warming your faces for the first time in what feels like an eternity.

You arrive at a small, fortified Thrane border town—a place of wary folk and high walls. It is here, in a smoky tavern called ‘The Last Light,’ that you first hear whispers from the wider world as you try to blend in.”

  • DM’s Prompt for #13: “Thirteen, you have had a week to process the flood of memories. Here, surrounded by the mundane sounds of civilian life for the first time since they returned, does anything in particular stand out? Do you choose to share the story of your past, of Twelve and the ‘Hornets,’ with the others?”

  • Rumors to Overhear:

    • A worried merchant complains that the Lightning Rail to Flamekeep has been shut down for ‘track repairs’ for over two weeks, costing him a fortune.

    • A traveling pilgrim speaks with awe of a “new Prophetess named Lira” who has returned from the Mournland with a holy relic.

    • The tavern keeper mutters to a regular that he heard the Keeper of the Flame, young Jaela Daran, has fallen ill and is in seclusion.

Phase 3: The Heart of Thrane (The Second Week)

“Leaving the borderlands behind, you now travel on the main roads of Thrane. The land is alive with rolling hills and farmland, but there’s a new, palpable tension in the air. You see far more templar patrols on the roads than you remember, their armor gleaming, their faces hidden behind severe-looking helms. They stop travelers, questioning them with a cold efficiency you don’t recall from before.”

  • DM’s Prompt for Elrath & Took: “Elrath and Took, you’ve now been traveling side-by-side for weeks since your reconciliation in the facility. How has that new understanding settled between you? Is it a comfortable silence born of shared hardship, or have you found a new, unlikely friendship on this long road?”

  • Small Event: The New Tithe:

“You witness a patrol stopping a family of farmers. The lead templar, wearing a banner with the new, harsh-looking flame symbol, is demanding a ‘purity tithe’ in silver to fund the ‘Church’s coming Rededication.’ The farmer protests that he has already paid his tithes for the season, but the templar is unyielding. This is not a request; it is a demand.”

Phase 4: The Final Approach (The Last Few Days)

“You are now in the final days of your journey. You can see the distant, brilliant light of the Cathedral of the Silver Flame on the horizon, but it seems… different. Colder, somehow. The roads are more crowded, but the people are somber, their faces filled with a mixture of fear and forced reverence. The presence of Lira’s ‘Purified Flame’ templars is everywhere.”

  • DM’s Final Prompt: “You make camp for what you believe is the last time before reaching home. The light of Flamekeep glimmers in the distance. What are your hopes and plans? What is the first thing each of you wants to do when you finally arrive?”

(This last prompt perfectly sets up the dramatic irony of what they are about to face at the gates.)
