Scene: The Ritual at the Heart of Making
- The Setup: The Plan (The party has arrived and taken in the awe-inspiring sight of the dormant Creation Forge.)
Scouts dusts off his hands and approaches a complex-looking console connected by thick cables to one of the large, glowing alchemical vats. “This is it,” he says, his voice a low hum of excitement and nervousness. “The Alchemical Purification Station. Rock and I have all the chemical components we need to counteract the curse…”
Rock joins him, looking from the console to the massive, floating obelisk. “…but the final reaction needs a catalyst. A significant surge of pure, arcane energy. We have to draw it from the forge’s emergency core.”
Scouts points to a heavy-looking power coupling lying disconnected on the floor. “We need to connect that coupling to the main conduit to divert the power. It’ll be brief, but… it might attract attention.”
Player Involvement: This is a good spot for a simple, collaborative check. You can ask for a Strength (Athletics) check from one or two characters to help Rock move the heavy coupling, and an Intelligence (Investigation or Arcana) check from another to help Scouts identify the correct port on the humming conduit.
2. The Activation: The Trigger (Once the players succeed, you can describe the forge partially waking up.)
“With a great effort, you slam the massive coupling into place. A deafening CLANG echoes through the cathedral of artifice, and for the first time, the Creation Forge stirs.
The low hum intensifies, and dormant runes on the floating obelisk flicker with faint silver light. The alchemical pool beside the station begins to swirl, glowing with a fierce, internal heat.
‘It’s working!’ Scouts shouts over the noise, beginning to work the console with frantic precision as Rock adds the chemical compounds to the vat. ‘We just need to hold this for a minute while the reaction completes!‘”
- The Intrusion (Your Optional Combat) (This is your decision point. You can read the room and choose Path A or Path B.)
Path A: The Tense Resolution (No Combat)
“The minute passes in a tense, vibrating silence, the hum of the forge the only sound. You keep your eyes scanning the darkness, weapons ready, but nothing stirs. Suddenly, the mixture in the vat flashes with a brilliant, cleansing white light, and then all at once, the power dies down, plunging the chamber back into near silence. The ritual is complete.”
(If you choose this path, you can skip straight to Step 4: The Resolution.)
Path B: The Nesting Monster (Combat Encounter)
“But the surge of energy has awoken something else. From a large, dark slag pit in the center of the chamber, a violent bubbling begins. The surface breaks, and a massive, dripping form of molten metal and screaming slag rises from the pit. It has no face, only two points of hateful, white-hot light that fixate on the reactivated forge.
It sees you as an intrusion into its nest. With a roar like grinding metal, the Forgespawn lurches towards you.”
The Objective: The party’s goal is clear: Defeat this creature to protect Rock and Scouts. This is their first true test with their new Epic Boons.
Let Them Shine: This is the perfect time to encourage your players to describe how they use their new boons. "Took, how does the Flame-Guided Hand look as you turn that miss into a guaranteed Sneak Attack?" "Toriman, describe the Argent Step as you teleport behind the beast!"
4. The Resolution (This scene happens immediately after the combat ends, or after the tense minute of waiting.)
“With the Forgespawn collapsing into a heap of inert, cooling metal, the chamber falls silent once more.
Rock and Scouts look up from the console. You watch as the ugly, corrosive rust flakes away from their bodies like old paint, falling to the floor and dissolving into dust. Beneath it is the clean, healthy plating of their original forms.
Rock flexes a hand, no longer stiff with the curse. ‘You… you did it,’ he says, his voice thick with emotion. ‘You saved us.’
Scouts gives a triumphant, weary smile and gestures to the console. ‘The ritual is complete. And I used the last of the power surge to bypass the primary lock on the main service conduit.’ With a deep groan of ancient machinery, a section of the far wall grinds open, revealing a dark, massive tunnel. ‘The way out is open. It’s time to leave this place behind.‘”
This structure gives you a clear plan that hits all your required story beats and provides a flexible, but meaningful, slot for your optional combat encounter.
