Example: Using “The Last Muster” as the Theme for Day 3
-
Start of Day 3:
DM: “After a difficult short rest, you press on. The landscape continues to be a mix of shattered fortifications and glassy plains. For today’s journey, your goal is still to make progress towards Making by achieving 3 successes before 3 failures. As you travel through the morning, a strange feature appears on the horizon – a sheltered, shallow canyon that seems oddly… calm.”
-
Morning Phase (Discovery & Approach - 2 Checks):
- The challenge isn’t just “traveling,” it’s “investigating and safely approaching this strange canyon.”
- DM Prompt: “This canyon feels different from the surrounding area. The wind is calmer, and the oppressive dread seems to lessen slightly. How do you two approach this anomaly to determine if it’s safe?”
- Potential PC Actions & Checks:
- Sarodan: “I’ll use my ranger abilities, moving stealthily along the canyon rim to get a better vantage point and look for any potential ambushes before we commit.” (Dexterity (Stealth) check).
- Davira: “I’ll cast Detect Magic as a ritual as we approach, trying to get a read on the aura of this place. Is it a trap? A sanctuary?” (Intelligence (Arcana) check to interpret the findings).
-
Midday Phase (Exploration & Understanding - 2 Checks):
- Assuming they enter, they find the silent Warforged. The challenge now becomes understanding what this place is.
- DM Prompt: “You are now within the Warforged graveyard, a place of silent, rusting reverence. It seems safe from immediate threats, but the mystery is profound. What are the next two of you doing to try and unravel this?”
- Potential PC Actions & Checks:
- #13: “I feel a strange connection here. I will walk among my brethren and examine the symbols they’ve carved into their plating and the nearby rocks, trying to understand their final messages.” (Intelligence (History) or Intelligence (Investigation) check).
- Toriman: “Feeling the weight of these lost soldiers, I will use my Divine Sense to check for any lingering fiendish or undead presence, and use my Insight to try and grasp the collective emotion that permeates this place – is it sorrow, peace, or something else?” (Wisdom (Insight) check).
-
Evening Phase (Resolution & Shelter - 2 Checks):
- The party has learned about the Lord of Blades, etc. The challenge is now about how they treat this hallowed ground as they prepare to rest.
- DM Prompt: “You’ve uncovered some of the secrets of this place. The light is fading. This canyon seems safer than the open plains, but how do you ensure it? What are the final two actions to secure your camp here?”
- Potential PC Actions & Checks:
- Elrath: “Out of respect, I’ll find a secluded spot away from the main gathering of Warforged to set our camp. I’ll use Survival to make sure it’s a defensible position that doesn’t disturb the fallen.” (Wisdom (Survival) check).
- Took: “I’ll use my Perception to scout the entrances to the canyon, looking for any signs of creatures that might use this place as a lair or passage, ensuring our ‘safe’ spot is actually safe.” (Wisdom (Perception) check).
