The Puzzle Interface (What the players see on the screen):

When they interact with the terminal, they see a simple diagnostic interface.

“The screen displays a power distribution schematic. A line labeled ‘MAIN CONDUIT POWER’ shows a wildly fluctuating number. Below it are three subsystems, each with a dial next to it currently set to a specific power draw:”

  • Auxiliary Lighting - Sector 8 (Power Draw: 4 units)
  • Waste Reclamation & Sanitation (Power Draw: 6 units)
  • 'Aegis' Containment Field - Failsafe (Power Draw: 8 units)

“At the bottom of the screen, a line reads ‘Containment Door Junctions - Emergency Power,’ currently at 0 units. A flashing red warning message at the top of the screen reads: ‘GRID INSTABILITY DETECTED. STABILIZE OUTPUT TO JUNCTIONS. REQUIRED OUTPUT: 10 UNITS. VIEW LOGS?‘

The Clue (The Integrated Lore Drop):

If they choose to “VIEW LOGS?”, the fragmented engineer’s log appears on screen. This is the key to the puzzle.

Log Entry #774 (Technician Vasha d’Cannith, Deceased): “Power surges from the Core Lab are out of control. ‘Project Radiance’ is drawing too much. We’re trying to bleed the excess into the Aegis containment field as a failsafe, but the system wasn’t designed for this… the energy isn’t dissipating. I fear it’s making the Aegis stronger, more volatile.”

Log Entry #775 (Final, Corrupted): “It’s a feedback loop… the field is… a cage… making the bars stronger… if anyone reads this… you have to divert power away from the Aegis containment to stabilize the grid… it’s the only way… don’t let it… (static)“

The Solution:

The puzzle is a simple logic and resource allocation problem with a thematic twist. The players need to get the “Emergency Power” line to exactly 10 units. They can do this by turning the dials to reduce the power draw from the three subsystems.

  • The Obvious (but incorrect) Path: They will likely try to turn down “Lighting” (from 4 to 0) and “Sanitation” (from 6 to 0). This gives them exactly 10 units of power (4 + 6 = 10). When they do this and try to confirm, a message might appear: “GRID UNSTABLE. Failsafe protocol ‘Aegis Containment’ drawing maximum available power. Cannot reroute. Purge Failsafe protocol?” This prompts them that they must interact with the Aegis system.
  • The Correct (but scary) Path: They must read the logs and realize that reducing power to the “Aegis Containment Field” is what the engineer recommended. It feels counter-intuitive and dangerous to lower a “containment field,” which makes the solution a fun moment of debate and discovery.

The Action:

  • They need to turn the dials to achieve a total of 10 units. For example:
    • Lighting: from 4 0 (frees up 4 units)
    • Aegis Containment: from 8 2 (frees up 6 units)
    • Sanitation: remains at 6
    • Total power freed: 4 + 6 = 10 units.
  • When they input this configuration and confirm, the screen flashes green: “GRID STABILIZED. JUNCTION POWER ENABLED.” The arcs of lightning from the Grand Conduit cease, making the cavern safe to cross.
