The Setup (What you describe to the party):

  • The Hazard: As they explore the Assembly Yard, remind them of the environmental hazard: “The air hums with unstable energy from the cracked core of the dormant Warforged Titan looming over this yard. At the end of every 10 minutes you spend actively working or searching, you must each make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw to resist the strange radiation, with minor unsettling effects on a failure.” This creates a sense of urgency to solve the puzzle efficiently.
  • The Location: Following the final clue in Scouts’ journal (“my trail starts at the base of the fallen smokestack”), they arrive at their destination.

“At the base of the colossal, toppled smokestack, you find a reinforced maintenance wall built by House Cannith. Set into the wall is a large circular nexus with eight identical, seven-sided maintenance hatches arranged around it. Each hatch is made of dark iron and marked with a designation number from 1 to 8. Above each hatch is a single, large, unlit crystal. This must be the conduit access point from Scouts’ schematics.”

The Deduction process

Rule 1 (No Exhausts): Immediately eliminates Hatch #1 and #8.

Remaining options: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7

Rule 4 (Must be Prime): Eliminates non-prime numbers.

Remaining options: 2, 3, 5, 7

Rule 3 (Avoid Spark ⚡): Eliminates any hatches with the Spark symbol.

Remaining options: 3, 7

Rule 2 (Needs at least two regulators: Gear ⚙️ & Coil 🌀): They check the final two options.

Hatch #3 has [Gear ⚙️, Coil 🌀]. This fits!
Hatch #7 has [Gear ⚙️, Coil 🌀, Piston]. This also fits!

The Final Deduction: This is where they might get stuck between two options. A final clue could be needed. Perhaps another note on the schematic says “Keep it simple. Unnecessary components lead to instability.” This would point to Hatch #3 being the correct one, as it has the minimal required components, whereas Hatch #7 has an extra (the Piston).
