Lair Actions
Shard’s Benevolent Aura. At the start of the Round, the Heart of Radiance shard at the centre of the chamber pulses with a gentle, restorative light. Any creature of your choice that you can see can use its reaction to accept this energy, regaining hit points equal to twice their proficiency bonus.
Overload State
When Aegis’s Paragon Fortitude (Core Integrity) is reduced to 0, its core systems are critically compromised, and it enters an Overload state for the remainder of the combat.
“With a deafening screech of grinding metal, Aegis rears back. Red light bleeds from the seams of its armor plates, and steam vents violently from its joints. Its movements become more frantic, desperate, and powerful.”
- Aegis gains 1 level of exhaustion.
- Aegis loses its Force Absorption trait and its resistances to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks. Aegis’s Kinetic Pulse (Recharge 5-6) becomes Overload Pulse (Recharge 4-6). It unleashes a pulse of force energy in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that cone must make a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 36 (6d12) force damage, is pushed 15 feet away from Aegis, and is knocked prone. On a successful save, a creature takes half as much damage and is pushed 5 feet away from Aegis.
- Aegis’s melee attacks (Claw, Tail, Wings) now deal an additional 1d4 force damage.
- Overload Surge (Replaces Deploy Containment Servitors Legendary Action): When Aegis enters this state, any existing Containment Servitors gain +2 AC, their movement becomes 40 ft. (fly 60 ft.), and their Energy Discharge deals an additional 1d4 force damage (for a total of 1d6 + 1d4 force damage). Their Repair Beam ability is disabled. Aegis can use this legendary action to deploy two additional Containment Servitors with these enhanced stats.
- Aegis gains the Destabilized Core legendary action option.
- Destabilized Core (3 Actions): Aegis channels the chaotic energy within. Each creature within 30 feet of Aegis must make a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw, taking 17 (5d6) force damage on a failed save, or half as much on a successful one. This ability deals 7 (2d6) force damage to Aegis as backlash.
Containment Overload Protocol
This won’t be explicitly on Aegis’s stat block, but rather something discovered within the Core Lab environment where the fight takes place. Aegis, as a guardian of the ultimate experiment and absorber of volatile energies, would naturally be vulnerable to a controlled (or uncontrolled) release of the very energy it’s designed to contain.
How to Implement and Discover:
-
Lore Integration:
- The Core Lab should have prominent energy conduits, containment terminals, or reactor control panels throughout the arena. These should look distinct and important. You plan for two such terminals in the chamber.
- Clues within the Dungeon: Scatter hints throughout the dungeon leading up to the final boss.
- Scientist Journals/Logs: “Project Radiance energy stabilization protocols… if Aegis’s core containment fails, manual system purge via Unit 7 terminals may be necessary to avert meltdown, though it risks overloading Aegis’s active absorption array temporarily.”
- Schematics/Blueprints: Players might find a complex diagram showing energy flow, with certain “purge valves” or “diversion conduits” highlighted, possibly with a warning symbol.
- Damaged Drones/Servitors: Perhaps a destroyed servitor, when examined (DC 13 Intelligence (Investigation) or proficiency with tinker’s tools), has a diagnostic log entry like: “Warning: Uncontained energy surges detected near [specific terminal/conduit name]. Aegis rerouting core functions for containment.”
-
The “Sacrifice” Action:
- Action Required: A creature can use its action to interact with a designated Containment Terminal or Energy Conduit within the Core Lab.
- Limited Use: Each terminal can only be successfully activated once per encounter.
- Effect: The terminal/conduit overloads, releasing a chaotic surge of energy that strikes Aegis.
-
Aegis’s Vulnerability:
- If the Containment Overload Protocol is successfully activated:
- A visible cascade of arcing energy erupts from the terminal/conduit and impacts Aegis.
- Until the end of Aegis’s next turn:
- Aegis’s AC is reduced by 2.
- Aegis loses its Force Absorption trait.
- Aegis loses its resistances to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from nonmagical attacks.
- Aegis has disadvantage on the next saving throw it makes.
- If the Containment Overload Protocol is successfully activated:
Inert in Overload State: This protocol’s effects cannot be activated or applied to Aegis once it has entered its Overload State. Any active terminals become inert at this point.
Narrative/Visuals: Describe Aegis sparking erratically, its internal core glowing violently, and its metallic plates groaning under the strain of containing the uncontrolled energy. It looks momentarily unstable and vulnerable.
